Bakmi Gadjah Mada: Favorite Jakarta Noodle
Bakmi Gadjah Mada (GM) has been in business at least for 30 years.
Touted as one of the best noodle house in Jakarta, its pangsit goreng (fried
wonton) is to die for. It takes its name from the street its first store is
located (Gadjah Mada street). Some people believe the best Jakarta noodles are
Bakmi Gg Kelinci (non-kosher) and Bakmi GM (kosher). Bakmi GM has become
one of Jakarta foods icon. When visiting Jakarta, revel in this noodle.
Go for bakmi pangsit goreng (fried wonton noodle). Besides wonton noodle, it has
meatball noodle, chicken noodle, and special GM noodle. I remember on my last
visit there, I ordered chicken noodle. Noodle was served with chicken and
mushrooms on top, with chicken soup on the side. All were mouth watering. Just
to illustrate how good the noodle is, one of my friends, who had been away from
Indonesia for a few years, ordered not two, not three, but four bowls of Bakmi
GM upon his visit to Indonesia! All for himself, and we are talking about a
135-lb guy.
In
case you are not into noodles, it also serves fried rice (although I have never
tasted their fried rice - what for? You go to Bakmi GM for its tasty noodles).
You can't go wrong here: the noodle, the deep-fried wonton, the fried rice are
all remarkable. Long lines are to be expected on weekends. The price is
reasonable (about Rp. 10.000 to Rp. 20.000 per bowl) and the food is awesome
(cannot stop praising its foods). It is also good for take out. Great value,
great taste, and rapid-fire service.
