ABOUT INDONESIAN CUISINE

Indonesia's culinary techniques and ingredients draw from Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and European influences. Rice is Indonesia's main staple except in Eastern Indonesia. So fanatics are Indonesians of rice, that they consume rice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Unlike in other cultures, dishes are eaten in small quantities, with lots and lots of rice. Meat, fish and vegetables are condiments designed to flavor rice. Ultra popular condiments are sambal (chili paste), kecap (soy sauce), and kerupuk (chips). Very rarely Indonesians skip these condiments altogether when dining.

Indonesian signature dishes include Gado-gado (Indonesian salad with peanut dressing), Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice), Rendang (Beef Stew), Ayam Goreng (Fried Chicken) and Satay (Chicken kabob). All authentic Indonesian restaurants carry these dishes.
